Hoplocerambyx spinicornis and Hoplocerambyx severus. We all know how distinguish them:
- H. spinicornis has a shorter neck and longer yellow (?) pubescence. It is widespread from India to Philippines (here a female from Mindanao, 55 mm long) and Indonesia (Borneo, Sumatra and Java).
- H. severus has a longer neck and shorter silver pubescence. It is widespread in New Guinea (thus, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea). Here a female from Irian Jaya (Indonesia) 64 mm long.
But, do you know how to really identify relatively small female specimens (38-40 mm long) coming from "Indonesia"?

Posted - 18/01/2015 : 14:39:02 Many thanks to both. It seems to me that the carachters of the neck (granulate = spinicornis, strigate = severus) are more constant. So, both my small specimens belong to H. severus. |
