Sabah, Melalap, July 25 mm

Here is another picture. There is a fine line of pale pubescence along the suture that slightly shows up here.

I think that the antennae in Bill's photo is not positioned parallel to ground, hence the shape of the scape is being viewed at an oblique angle.

I have seen countless Elydnus from Sabah. I have never seen any E. dembickyi... I have seen a few E. huedepohli. I have seen dozens of E. grossescapus, including very large ones and some smaller ones which have smaller scapes. There is also E. pascoei in Sabah pictured here, which is distinct as well.

Last year I sent a potentially undescribed Elydnus (1 specimen) to Vives for study. I believe it is most closely related to E. pascoei.

I don't think we can agree on a name for this specimen based on a photograph.

Not sure if its scratched, perhaps worn from life in the jungle or being papered and then relaxed and mounted. There appears to be random pubescence along the suture but not a true stripe. Will check it under magnification and report back if I see anything different.

You are right that this specimen is not E. grossescapus - even if the HT photo is bad, the strange scapus is quite apparent.
However, E. dembickyi should have stripe of light pubescent along the suture (see differential diagnosis in the description). Bill's suture looks as, say, scratched, is it right, Bill?

Hello, I think that you are mistaken. Look at the length of the third article and the size of the scape.

Elydnus huedepohli Vives is similar to grossescapus
The difference is in the 3rd antennal segment. In your photo, I believe
It to be grossescapus but there is always a possibility
Of a mistake. E grossescapus has a longer segment.

Yes, E. grossesvapus

The photo is terrible as usually, but I do not know any record of E. demickyi from Borneo (how about you Dan?).
Hence, it should be E. grossescapus - scapus is rather abnormal in shape, right?

Elydnus dembickyi Holzschuh 2003

I do not know. You have the specimen, and you can check better than me with your picture.

Based on the pics on Larry's site, it appears to be E. dembickyi Holz. 2003.
agree?
