very hard to differentiate these two species...

Yes, both ID are exact.

According to Gahan (1906) X. subscutellatus has
- dark brown integuments (brown in X. smei or reddish in immature specimens),
- yellow (greyish or slightly yellowish in X. smei) and complete elytral pattern (oft reduced to spots or missing in X. smei males)
- postbasal spot normally larger, curved and united to the scutellum (finer and separated from the scutellum in X. smei).

From what I have seen X. subscutellatus often shows reddish legs in specimens with dark elytra, while reddish legs are always related to immature specimens in X. smei.
