Now, two photos of Purpuricenus sanguinolentus (Olivier, 1795), males.
Sorry for the quality, photos were made in hurry.
But have a look at the pattern in pronotum. This corresponds well to the Gahan's description.

Well, I realize that I don't use the same description (I looked only Gahan, 1906)... I begin to understand

Just compare pronotum in photos of P. malaccensis and P. sanguinolentus.
The former has an area at the basis (more shiny, but with rougher punctation), which is curved backward in the centre.
This area is much more curved backward and has a central tooth in P. sunguinolentus.

Both species are from China.
The matter is not in uniformity. The punctation is right like Gahan describes it:"...with a more coarsely punctured and less opaque area that forms a narrow transverse band at the base from which a short median lobe and two much longer and broader lateral lobes are given off in front..."
If you magnify my photo, you will see that an area with rough punctures at the pronotum basis has two long side arms reaching almost the first 1/4 of the pronotum and a short arm (or even a small spot in left specimen) in the middle.

Thanks a lot Vitali. Where are your specimens from ?
The ponctuation seems more uniform, right ? Is the scape exavation less deep than for P.malaccensis ?
