The specimen shown here is from Luzon, and I have several more like it from Luzon. Epania discolor was described from Ceram. Dr. Tatsuya Niisato believes this species from Luzon is also E. discolor, or something extremely close to it, and he has two specimens (very close to Luzon examples) from Palawan and Indonesia (no further data). The illustration in Pascoe is consistent with the specimens from Luzon, however I don't have a photo of the holotype. This is an interesting problem because the known localities are quite far apart. More specimens from outside of Luzon are needed. |

Posted - 16/12/2014 : 00:43:22 Well, it happens over and over again. The webpages you noted above does NOT show the type - only a figure taken from the Pascoe book. The other specimen, preserved in CAS, was collected in Luzon and was incorrectly determined (I do not remember by whom) as the species of Pascoe. However, it is rather the one of Heller (or another one).
I'm afraid I have no specimens from Mindanao.
The type of Pascoe in London is realy "discolor", due to the time. However, some differences are quite apparent, such as light v. dark femora of mid legs, slightly different elytra markings. Also, the pronotum stripes should be yellow v. white(?). |

Yes, there is a very good chance that the species is E. aurocollaris, but the holotype of E. aurocollaris is from Mindanao, and the 4 specimens I have from Luzon. It appears that the illustration of E. discolor (Pascoe, Longicornia, 1869) from Indonesia (Ceram or Seram) is also very similar. It is possible that Pascoe's specimen did not come from Indonesia, but was perhaps mis-labelled. There must be more specimens in a collection somewhere (private or institution) that will someday be studied, along with the holotypes of both species. |
