I noticed besides Petrognatha gigas there also exists the subspecies gigas spinosa, what is the difference between the two? |

According to the description, the variety spinosa Kolbe, 1894 is carachterised by the elytra provided with spines missing in the typical form.
Afterwards the original description:
Petrognatha gigas F. var. spinosa.
Alle Stücke dieser Art, welche auf dem Kamerungebirge (bei Bvvea) von Dr. Preuss gefunden wurden, unterscheiden sich von der Hauptform durch die stacheligen Flügeldecken. Diese sind reichlich mit aufrecht stehenden Stacheln besetzt, welche nur nach der Spitze zu kürzer und etwas nach hinten gebogen sind. Im übrigen ist kein Unterschied zwischen dieser Form und der Hauptform zu finden.
Aus anderen Gegenden Kameruns vorliegende Exemplare besitzen keine Spur von Stacheln, ebensowenig wie solche aus Ober- und Nieder-Guinea.
I do not know if this form is typical of Cameroon or can be also found somewhere else. However, Aurivillius (1921) (pag. 206) quoted this form from Congo and Fernando Po too. |
