Which one could it be, Thermonotus nigripes or Th. ruber?
Femora are partly red partly black.
In this Forum, Th. ruber is given for Laos, Th. nigripes for Yunnan.
Lamiaires du Monde gives the opposite. |

Well, Xavier, I hope this photo will better explain what I meant.
"Red and black legs" is trivial... It would be Thermonotus ruber, if femurs were red and tibia black. But I wrote about red and black FEMURS.
Look at this photo. How far is Th. nigripes from this beetle?
Just a next step. It seems rather a transition form between the two species in accordance with Francesco's suspicion that they may be the same. |

The colour of the femurs seems to be a variable character... Pic did not known Gahan's species... and Breuning quoted:
ruber: très proche de nigripes, mais le tubercule médian postérieur du pronotum élevé, formant une crête transversale saillante couvrant la partie basale, les élytres un peu plus allongés, plus grossièrement ponctué...

I haven't Thermonotus nigripes Ga. in collection, but the description seems clear : it is a species with black legs, known from north India and Malaysia (?, Penang)
So, Vitali, your specimen with black and red legs is for me Thermonotus ruber (Pic, 1923) described from "Tonkin".
But the problem is may be this one comming from Yunnan : is it a true T.nigripes ? legs are not totally black, and the locality is far from north India ... |

Good question. My specimens from Laos, like yours with black and red femora, are called Th. ruber.
I don't find the original description of Th. nigripes GAHAN Charles Joseph, 1888. LII. On new Lamiide Coleoptera belonging to the Monohammus Group.The Annals and Magazine of Natural History, London 6 (2) 11: 389-401.
