I normally remember the estimated size for recent finds, but many of the photos I posted recently are old ones which I am reviewing. How accurate do you need size estimates to be to help with identification? |

Oh my.. you are correct. Moron distigma Pascoe, 1858. Pteropliini ... not Mesosini
Too many beetles for my brain to remember.
I have a photo of the type from BMNH which I will post in the type section. I have never seen another specimen except for the type and another one at BMNH. |

Hi Nicky,
This species may be related to Coptops (tribe Mesosini).
You also posted some other photos of LBB's (little brown beetles), perhaps in the tribe Pteropliini. Unfortunately, even the most experienced members of this forum are not experts on these beetles, especially from SE Asia. There are still undescribed species, and sometimes there are species which have been described twice!
As a photographer, you probably don't have an opportunity to measure the specimen, but sometimes that is very helpful to us.
For the species shown above, Dr. Junsuke Yamasako of Japan is the best person to identify Mesosini from Malaysia and the surrounding region. He has been very helpful to me and will likely respond if you email a photo to him. I am especially interested in Bornean species and would like to know the name as well. |
