This fancy beetle comes from Tanzania.

It belongs obviously to Hippopsini (Agapanthiini?) and is most similar habitually to American Spalacopsis.
It would be great to have identified an African species.
I'll show the lateral view in the next posting.

Spalacopsis pauli (Fairmaire, 1884) in Fairmaire, 1887, Fig. 10

This is really a strange species and I have never seen it.
Nonetheless, you are right to write that is similar to Spalacopsis. Hence, looking for African species close to such genus in Aurivilius (1921), I have found (p. 360) the genus Amphistylus Gahan, 1890.
Searching for a paper having a picture, I have found in the French Annales a paper by Fairmaire (1887) treating this species. I attach here its picture (Tab. 3 Fig. 10).
Now Barrion & Khan (2003) replaced this genus with Hypamazso since preoccupied. Therefore, your species should be Hypamazso pauli (Fairmaire, 1884).

As promised, a lateral view. Remarkably, the mouth parts are almost touching from coxae.
