First, the species which was originally posted is NOT Rufohammus rufifrons (Aurivillius, 1927). Aurivillius illustrated that species. It has a black head and a red frons. The apical quarter of its elytra is black. I have a pair of this species from Sabah and I'll post a photo (under a new topic, to avoid confusion). It is also a relatively small species about 17-20 mm.
Next, somehow R. rufescens came into existence (from China ) and was synonymized under R. rufifrons. China and Borneo are rather distant the last time I checked a map. This synonymization looks like a mistake.
Since the type species of Rufohammus is R. rufescens Breuning, 1939, the species from Borneo may need a new genus, or maybe it can be moved to one of other genera in this large tribe. Another unlikely possibilty is that R. rufescens and and R. rufohammus are congeneric. Someday, this problem will be corrected, but I think a thorough revision of Lamiini, or Monochamini is required to solve the generic problems. |
