This genus is such a mess. Despite the good match to D. octavus, Pascoe described numerous species which are rather similar, and others have followed his tradition of describing everything that is just slightly different. With all due respect to Dr. Dauber, whom I have sent many, many specimens to, there are a lot of cases where I can not see the differences which he uses to separate species. I don't know if a high power microscope will help, or must one extract the genitalia of every specimen. When Steven Chew and his late brother were both collecting, I sometimes received 500 Demonax at a time, with potentially 20 or 30 species. The task of understanding this genus could be insurmountable. |

Totally agree with you (but not for all Dauber species). I have also some Demonax from Borneo with close pattern and I am unable to separate varaiations and species... That is why I just wrote "to compare with..." to give an idea. Better than nothing, no ? |
