Yes, I agree, there can be considerable variation in coloration.

So, on a structural base, not by coloration. I am not an expert but have noticed that colours and elytral markings may vary and are not always good for identifications.

They are separated by the size of the 3rd antennal segment and it's relation in size to the length of the pronotum and the 4th antennal segment.

Pierre, in consultation with a colleague (Antonio Santos-Silva), this is male Megaceron australe (Martins, 1960).
