Thanks for the identification. On a separate occasion in Pasoh forest in Malaysia, I found this species to be on the woody stem of a Liana plant over a period of 2 days; and males fought among themselves to mate with females.
I attach another picture below. Not sure if the white substance on the liana stem is eggs (bottom of the image, and also near the right hind tarsi). Anyone can confirm? A pity that I didn't notice these details in the field and made more observation.

I look through the Lamiinae catalog for the possible identity of this Athylia species. Excluding the Bornean & Javan species, these are the candidates: Athylia albomarmorata Breuning,1943 (Sumatra) Athylia flavovittata Breuning,1938 (Malayan Peninsula) Athylia pulcherrima Breuning,1938 (Java Is., Malayan Peninsula) Athylia venosoides Breuning,1956 (Sumatra) I am not able to obtain Breuning's description. Can anyone help ?
* Athylia venosa is ruled out as I have Pascoe¡¯s description and illustration.

this is a quite interesting sps, I can exclude the following sps:
Athylia albomarmorata Breuning,1943 (Sumatra) Athylia flavovittata Breuning,1938 (Malayan Peninsula) Athylia pulcherrima Breuning,1938 (Java Is., Malayan Peninsula) Athylia venosa (Pascoe, 1864)
furthermore Athylia venosoides (I think you mean vanessoides) Breuning, 1956 (Sumatra) I don't know.
I have found a type picture of Sodomorphus bellum Pic, 1926 belongs sure to Athylia, looks very simlar to your sps Loong Fah.

Merci Xaurus... a very minute beetle! I have tried to equalize the colours: maybe it looks more natural...

Thanks, Andreas and Francesco. What is the locality of this Sodomorphus bellum Pic, 1926?
I broadened the area of enquiry and looked at the Bornean and Javan species of Athylia: Enispia pulchra Fisher,1925 •Borneo Athylia similis Fisher,1925 •Borneo Athylia viduata Pascoe,1864 •Borneo, Vietnam (Ebaeides viduata) Enispia drescheri Fisher,1936 Java Enispia fasciata Fisher,1936 Java
But it seems from the respective descriptions that they can be ruled out too! That leaves the Athylia vanessoides (=venosoides) of Sumatra...although further afield, there are quite a few Philippines species. |
